un monde riant… pour un monde vivant

Context   A video produced for the KINO RETRO 2023 call for projects, « remake it! » organised by the Ciclic agency [Centre Val de Loire region] and Equinoxe in Châteauroux. The challenge was to produce a 5-minute video based on archive films supplied by Ciclic, on the theme « a living world ».
Intervention  We have lengthened the initial video to 5:31 to exactly match the length of the piece of music: les barricades mystérieuses [François Couperin], performed by Jean-Philippe Viret.
Un monde riant… that starts out as fiction, then turns into scenes from everyday life… work, leisure, school, sport, parades, travel films… indoors or out in nature. These short extracts, 191 extracts from 42 films in the Ciclic archives, follow one another and are juxtaposed, forming a mosaic of images, evolving to form a kind of grid… mysterious barricades? But unlike François Couperin’s musical piece, masterfully adapted by Jean-Philippe Viret, whose title remains forever enigmatic despite the many interpretations it has given rise to, this « monde riant… » gradually reveals its secret to reveal its full meaning at the end, a metaphorical abstraction of a living, spiritual world, a tribute to the painter Piet Mondrian.
